Phew! After what has been WAY too long of a wait, we’re finally ready with a new beta. It’s waiting for you by doing the Check For Updates from the Tubular window (and we tested it this time, it will actually update now). We’ll also be sending out an email to everyone who preordered with a direct link to the new version.
So what’s new this time around? Well, we’ve finally finished integrating Perian. That took longer than we were anticipating, and for that we do apologize. However, we’re seeing huge performance benefits, and it’ll help us down the road with some things that we’re really excited to do post-1.0. Right now, the only problem we’re having with Perian is that the video needs to preload fully before you can play it. We’re working on making the video streamable, so you only need to preload a small amount before it starts playing (like YouTube’s player). You can scrub to any frame you want, which is a huge advantage over the YouTube player (and, for that matter, any Flash video player, as it is a limitation of the technology).
We’ve also been fixing a bunch of little bugs. We got one of the biggest searching issues, and now you can search numerous times for whatever you want. Also, we think that we fixed the bug that people were having with searching for words with non-Roman characters. However, we only have a few phrases to search for, so if you speak a language with a non-Roman character set, please test out the search and let us know if you bump into any phrases that Tubular chokes on. We’ve also added a cache, so any video that you’ve watched can be loaded instantly should you choose to play it again. There isn’t any size restriction on it yet; we’ll be putting that in in a future version, as well as a category that will let you see the contents of your cache.
Enjoy, and as always let us know what bugs you guys run up against. And once again, sorry for those incredibly lame delays.

at 11:59 pm on February 22, 2007,This app still has a long way to go before you can consider it 1.0. These bugs still need fixing:
–Can’t type a lot in the search box
–Search is still finicky and slow
–The favorites that I add from the website dont get updated in the app
–Titles are still truncated
–The white button to hide the toolbar needs to beadded
–The new movie controls are great, but they need to be locked to the bottom of the window, otherwise it can look fine. Also, resizing a movie can result in some funky cosmetic issues.
–The gray search sorting bar can get clipped
–Convert to iPod still doesn’t work (it just says “conversion complete”.
And you really NEED these features for the app to be truly useful:
–Ability to edit your account info
–Subscription support
–Most importantly, SAVED SEARCHES (a.k.a smart folders)
–Descriptions
–When you search, your search text needs to appear on the bar below “top rated,” so you can easily switch between multiple searches as well as your favorites, featured vids, etc.
–Not totally necessary like the above 5, but more iTunes-like viewmodes.
Right now, Democracy totally demolishes this app in everything except iPod features (which are broken). I hope that changes.

at 1:25 am on February 23, 2007,Also I preordered, no new update-mail was sent to my box. So I got the info only here. After starting Tubular the download of the new version started and now I will test that one. Hope to get some improvements. Your lame developement-time and the lazy support are mentioned by you and the users, now, get some action please!

No, that´s not okay for me anymore, hope to get soon a usable version, or give back money, that´s not a game here, it´s a tragedy.

at 7:27 pm on February 23, 2007,I have to say I HATE TO WAIT! I would rather have the last version with all of the bugs than have to wait to watch a damn video.
There is still an issue with the video whoo what a surprise. I watched a video and then did a search, the window did not change! I clicked one of the items in the left sidebar and then my search results decided to show!
You seriously need to get this in gear and get a real working app together, I know this is beta but it’s a joke that your beta have been going on as long as it has, and to rewrite the video player in the middle before you get a working version up an running was a bad choice if you ask me.

at 7:44 pm on February 23, 2007,yes I really hate that I have to wait for the movie to finish downloading (that was one of the reasons why I bought this over Democracy!) There are many things that are just worse than the previous build, but I understand that you changed everything under the hood. I guess we should give you so more time to polish it. I hope Perian allows streaming movies instead of just downloading the movie. I really want that feature back! Thank you.

at 7:27 am on February 24, 2007,I think some of you are very much over reacting. You paid for a PRE-ORDER.
Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-order.
“A pre-order is an order placed for an item which has not yet been released. The idea for pre-orders came when people found it hard to get popular electronics in stores due to their popularity, companies were given the idea to allow people to reserve their own personal copy, which has been a huge success.”
Basically by purchasing this as a preorder you *reserved* a copy for yourself at possibly a less expensive price. People do this all the time with games, consoles, equipment, etc. Many times you have no idea when it will be released.
Guess what, you’re lucky he’s even providing betas. Since he stated this was a pre-order — you have no right to say anything more to him demanding it come out.
You made the choice to pre-order — you didn’t buy a finished product. It’ll come out eventually guys, CALM DOWN. Go outside and get some sunshine.
BTW, it works fine for me.

Mitch Said
at 3:54 pm on February 25, 2007,I think that everyone had different expectations for the quality of this app. For those who say some are over-reacting, like G Kelly, maybe you are okay with an app that isn’t very functional, which is fine if you are willing to wait. I bought because I was shown a product that appeared to work (remember the screencast?) and I Didn’t get that, so requesting a refund is not out of the question in my opinion.

at 12:21 pm on March 3, 2007,What a freakin’ disappointment! Not only do you have to wait for the video to download, but it comes up all vertically squished for not reason sometimes, and a lot of the time you can’t even get back to your search results when you want to. Basically, all I have to say is that children shouldn’t be writing software. They promise you the world and give you an unstable, nonfunctional headache. Sorry Tubular, it’s a TON easier to just use my web browser, and I AM NEVER BUYING ANYTHING FROM THIS DEVELOPER EVER EVER EVER AGAIN! This kid is slow to update, and I know he’s busy with his schoolwork and everything, but he’s abandoning his customer base and falsely advertising his crippled product. We’ve already fixed the bug that caused problems with very long search strings (where if the term you were looking for is longer than the actual search field, it would get cut off), and we’re working on some of the other bugs.

at 11:09 am on March 18, 2007,This is quite possibly the biggest disappointment. I paid for this in good faith that a neat app was shortly on it’s way, but it never arrived. I am willing to support good software development, but not paying you to go to school and write software on the side when you fell like it. You either have a markeable product or you don’t.
People have been posting for over a month now (we’re coming up on 1 month since your last blog post, by the way) that they want their money back. I join them in this request.
From a good business standpoint, please admit to yourself and your readers that you jumped the gun in hyping the product. I adamantly request my money back.
If, 3,6,10 months from now (because in reality, we have no idea how long this will go on) you do refine this into an application the mac community would deem to be a worthwhile, I will gladly spend the money again to purchase a liscense. I will even pay full price. But for you to sit on income based upon something that hasn’t been able to be delivered is unethical, and will most certainly harm your reputation as a developer and businessman.
Please do what is right by your customers and give people requesting their money back. If you are concerned that if you give it back, peoplebuy the product when it is complete - then perhpas you should rethink the product you are making.

at 1:55 pm on March 18, 2007,Ugh. I’ve been dealing with my ISP, who decided to shut off my internet access after losing my check. Anyway.
If you’re upset about the state of the application, well, send me bugs! I have received an extremely small number of bug reports, and a very small number of crash reports. I can’t fix what I don’t know about, and how I use Tubular may be completely different from how you use it.
Furthermore, this is not the “official” way to get in contact with me regarding personal information such as your preorder. If you have a question regarding that, please use the support email address above.
Beta 5 will be coming soon. I’ve been working on many of the bugs that have been plaguing the current and previous releases, including fixing the multiple searching problems and fixing the search field itself (where if you type a word or phrase that’s longer than the actual text field, it cuts it off). I’m also working on fixing the iPod conversion crashers.
Again, PLEASE don’t sit on the bugs you guys find. I can’t stress that enough. If you find something worth noting, I’d love to hear about it. And as the side of the comment bar says, “If you have a feature request, spot a bug, or have a question about Tubular, we’d appreciate it if you emailed us directly”.

at 2:31 pm on March 18, 2007,Oh dude. All the people are complaining all the time about bugs! You can read it in your posts! Tubular does not even start playing videos here, after fully downloading! It sucks to wait for the video to complete downloading it before you can watch it. Why don’t you do it like it is on youtube? Streaming should be available! Favorites do not update if I add Videos via youtube. The list goes on and on and I doubt that you have the skill to make this a great app. I did not see any mac app that worked worse! I definetely won’t buy software from you again!
Steve Streza Said
at 2:47 pm on March 18, 2007,Thorsten: I’ve gotten your crash logs, which has been very useful, but you seem to be the exception here. The point I’m trying to make is that a lot of people on the comments are saying that it’s buggy, but not actually giving any details. To quote one of your comments, “After several test-runs I have to say it´s much more instable than last release”. I can’t derive anything out of that that helps me to fix the reasons why it’s unstable.
It really makes a difference. That’s why email is the route I’m asking for when sending in bugs. That way, if I need more information, I can get it much easier by responding directly through the email, as opposed to trying to keep several different conversations open at once on here.

at 6:44 pm on March 21, 2007,Why are you avoiding the question many people are asking? If so many are asking for their money back why do you simply ignore it each time they ask? What you’re doing is killing your future as a developer. Stop thinking about the short term gains and focus on what your career is going to be like if you keep this reputation as a developer who avoids the tough decisions, and ignores customers?
